Ownership of Solabal S.A.T., is a society of 12 growers from the town of Abalos. The winery was founded in 1988 by the 12 partners, each with his own long grape-growing tradition. The concept was to develop a winery with the best modern technology available, which would create the best wine possible from those outstanding vineyards in the famous village of Abalos. From the beginning, this winery has received numerous awards and accolades in Spain. The vineyards are located in the town of Abalos, La Rioja Alta, northwest region of Rioja. The society owns 216 acres (90 ha) of vineyards, of which 80% are Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano, and 10% Viura. The vines are 30 years old, of which 90% are in the traditional vaso system and 10% are trellised. These vineyards are located 1,650 ft. (550m) above sea level in what is considered one of the best terrains in Rioja (La Sonsierra) located in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria Mountains. Average production is 6,000 kg/ha. Typical of La Sonsierra, the soil is calcareous clay with large slabs of soft calcareous rock which are found at the different depths in the vineyard. The climate is Continental, with hot days/cool nights. There is a moderating influence from Atlantic winds, and tempered by the Sierra Cantabria Mountains.
