Le Macioche

A half dozen 200+-year-old Cyprus trees lining the driveway give the Le Macioche estate a magical feel. Matilde Zecca and Achille Mazzocchi own the tiny 1.5-acre property; they have devoted this estate to produce some of the most traditional wines of Montalcino. There is a strict attention to detail and commitment to tradition that with only a 1500 case production allows them to dial in all aspects The four vineyards of Pianello, Pozzo, Ginestra and Orto are planted only to Sangiovese and are located on the rise just outside Montalcino to the Southeast. The prized Galestro soils are known to grow the best grapes in the area for Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. (Schist limestone mixed with calcareous clay) Even with the rise in temperatures in Tuscany, harvests here still happen in mid October most years. The wines are fermented in wooden vats and the macerations are as long as 30 days in good vintages. Brunello is finished in 40 Hl Slovenian vats for 3 years and the Rosso di Montalcino in Slovenian Tonneaux for 1 year. The wines have a gorgeous red center color with limpid red edges, typical of Sangiovese and these productions methods. The wines are lifted and floral, not dark and muscular, they are more elegant from this estate and are a pleasuer to drink.
