Sassetti Livio Pertimali
The wines of the Pertimali estate and the Sassetti family must be tried to understand the greatness of Brunello. Livio Sassetti was among the founding fathers of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello in 1967. The Sassetti family has been producing and bottling traditionally-inspired Brunello since 1915. This ‘quiet giant’ has made some of the most ledgendary wines to come out of Tuscany. The Brunellos from 1971, 1982, 1985, 1990, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2010 vintages are benchmarks in Italian wine production. The family winery is nestled in a tiny valley at the bottom of the Montosoli vineyard under the village walls of Montalcino on the north side. The family’s entire 16 hectares of holdings reside in the “grande localita” Montosoli, which if classified like Burgundy, would be one of the few true grand cru sites of Montalcino. It has a perfect balance of north side temperment and cool night breezes with a wonderful, protected southern exposure that takes up the summer sun. The deep Galestro layers retain perfect sub-soil humidity that sangiovese craves in the long, dry summers of southern Tuscany. Today, Livio’s son Lorenzo, and his family, take care of the estate and keep little changed as they continue the long tradtion of one of Italy’s greatest properties. In 1999 Lorenzo established a small winery in Maremma within Montecucco DOC where they create simply stunning Tuscan Sangiovese value wines.
